Corrosion can have a slow and deadly effect on your Kia water pump - so take a few steps to avoid damage to your coolant system. Flush your coolant system regularly as a means to cut down on the air, gasses, impurities, deposits or rust in the coolant fluid. Recommendations can vary for different vehicles, but do it at least once every five years. By flushing, the corrosive filth that has collected in your cooling system over the years will be removed. The flushing will cut down on the buildup of combustion gasses in the coolant, which can leak in through a break in the head gasket. Those gasses will curtail the coolant from acting as an anticorrosive agent, as well. Use distilled water, since that can reduce levels of calcium, lime and other minerals that will clog your radiator. Those minerals also diminish the effectiveness of your coolant fluid. Some antifreeze liquids use phosphates to inhibit corrosion, but too much calcium in the water will create scale that clogs the coolant system. In an emergency, use tapwater but be aware that softened water contains salts that will damage the cooling system of your Kia vehicle. Change your coolant every two to three years, since the coolant losses its anticorrosive powers over time. By ensuring you have enough coolant and water in your system, and checking your hoses regularly for leaks, you can lengthen the life of your Kia water pump.
