The smooth and powerful ride that you've enjoyed in your Infiniti is now full of hesitations and surges - can your Infiniti oxygen sensors be failing? Infiniti oxygen sensors are delicate instruments that can withstand a tremendous amount of heat - they need to be about 600 degrees Fahrenheit to work at maximum capacity. At the same time, they need to be protected from any foreign substances that would interfere with the current flowing through them. An oxygen sensor can be expected, under best conditions, to last 100,000 miles. When an oxygen sensor fails, you will notice a lot of the symptoms that are seen when other components in the combustion system are ailing: bucking, surging and hesitation when you press the gas pedal. Misfires and rough idles. Because the Engine Control Unit (ECU) will, by default, create a rich fuel mixture when the oxygen sensors begin to fail, the exhaust will emit excess fuel that is not needed for combustion. Because of the higher levels of hydrocarbons, you might fail an emissions test. Gas mileage will drop. Because the symptoms are so similar to other component failures in the combustion system, you might have to do some detective work to pinpoint the cause. Run a code check to see if any oxygen sensor failure codes appear. Or use a probe to check the voltage in the sensor, which should vary according to the lean (fuel-poor) or rich (a lot of fuel) conditions.
