When it comes to trucks, military vehicles, SUVs, and vans no other brands can beat GMC. This brand is General Motor's second largest selling vehicle. It is marketed by GM in North America and in the Middle East. The history of GMC started with a guy named Max Grabowsky who set up a company called Rapid Motor Vehicle Company. This company was later on purchased by GM as it basis for its General Motors Truck Company. Another manufacturer was purchased by GM, the Reliance Motor Car Company together with the Rapid, GM formed a collaboration between the two independent companies and finally came up with the GMC Truck. GM's initial truck was shown at the New York International Auto Show. Some 22,000 trucks were produced that year of which 372 units were GMC. There were also GMC parts, GMC truck parts, and GMC accessories manufactured to supply the requirements of GMC customers.

GMC is basically an acronym for General Motors Corporation. For World War II approximately 600,000 GMC trucks were produced for military use. Today GMC is producing SUVs, pickup trucks, vans, light trucks, and medium-duty trucks. GMC has also manufactured fire trucks, heavy-duty trucks, motorhomes, military vehicles, transit buses, and ambulances. The replacement GMC parts, GMC truck parts, and GMC accessories were also manufactured by GMC.

In terms of appearance, GMC trucks and Chevrolet trucks are virtually similar except for the front grilles and nameplates. The other difference is that Chevrolet vehicles are distributed exclusively by Chevrolet dealers while GMC light duty trucks are made available to Pontiac, Cadillac, and Buick dealerships. Distinctive GMC parts such as dual-headlights were also used for GMC vehicles. In 1973, the brand has started the introduction of its new rounded line series trucks making the GMC trucks looks more like the Chevrolet trucks. The introduction of the rounded line series has finally removed the barrier that distinguishes a Chevrolet truck from that of a GMC. At present, GMC is offering similar trucks under Chevrolet brand but at a much lower volume. Aside from its truck lineup, GMC is also renowned for its crossover SUV such as the Acadia, which is the brand's first unibody vehicle and the Terrain, the brand's smallest crossover.
