Your Chrysler oxygen sensor depends on two things to work properly: a closed loop and high temperatures. The job of your Chrysler oxygen sensor is to inform the car's electronic control unit about the fuel-to-air mixture in the combustion system. With that information, which is relayed via voltage from the sensor, the ECU then adjusts the fuel injection controls. That requires a "closed loop" of current flowing between the ECU and the sensor. The sensor also requires heat to activate the process. Some oxygen sensors come with two, three or four wires that provide power and ground the sensor while preheating it. The sensor needs to be very hot to begin conducting electricity and complete the electrical circuit between the ECU and sensor. When the Chrysler oxygen sensor is at about 600 degrees Fahrenheit, it has reached peak efficiency levels. The voltage in the oxygen sensor swings between 0.1V and 1.0V, depending on the rich or lean qualities of the fuel. If the loop is open (or in other words, the electrical circuit is not complete) the ECU reads 0.45V, and it relies on the other sensors to provide data on how much fuel to inject. Usually, that means that the injectors work extra hard to send fuel to the engine, which means excess fuel is burned or sent straight to the exhaust. If the sensor is blocked somehow, or it cannot heat up to complete the loop, the engine will begin to suffer from lousy fuel mileage, high emissions and weak power. Sometimes the exterior of the Chrysler oxygen sensor will become blocked with engine fluids, such as coolant, oil and corrosion.
