The Chrysler brake caliper is kind of like the hired goon of your brake system. The master cylinder tells the Chrysler brake caliper exactly what to do and when to do it via hydraulic pressure, and the Chrysler brake caliper puts the squeeze on the brake rotor. By using a large piston in the Chrysler brake caliper, a tiny amount of hydraulic fluid from the master cylinder can exert a tremendous amount of force on the brake pads. The rotor is caught in the middle, since the Chrysler brake caliper straddles the disc at all times, and with a little luck your car comes to a stop prior to impacting anything expensive. Any Chrysler with disc brakes has a Chrysler brake caliper on each front wheel, at least. If you have four-wheel discs, like most new Chrysler products do, there's a Chrysler brake caliper at each corner of your vehicle. Since the disc brake system uses a rotor and a Chrysler brake caliper that are exposed, the brakes are better able to shed damaging heat and dry off after hitting a puddle. Of course, the Chrysler brake caliper isn't immune to deterioration. If the brake fluid isn't changed regularly, moisture begins to attack the piston bore of the Chrysler brake caliper causing rough operation and leaks. Eventually, the Chrysler brake caliper will stick causing either excessive brake operation (dragging) or no brake operation (seizing) at one corner of the car. Neither situation is good since your stopping distances will be affected by any Chrysler brake caliper problem. Fortunately, changing a Chrysler brake caliper is not a difficult operation and parts are readily available. As always, make sure you have a good service manual handy and purchase a quality new or remanufactured Chrysler brake caliper for the job.
