Your Cadillac water pump keeps your engine cool by circulating coolant fluid. When the Cadillac water pump fails, it can be sometimes traced to issues with its housing and shafts, which can crack the pump. Why would the housing and shafts fail? The shaft is the rod that connects the pump motor to the impeller, which boosts the pressure of the coolant fluid. Sometimes, the pulley belts have been cracked or bent by careless workmanship, which weakens the housing and shafts. Sometimes the fan will not be properly mounted on the shaft, or the fan becomes warped and unbalanced under the pressure of too much vibration. If the pulley belts are too tight, this will overload the bearing, which keeps the shaft rotating in place. Or, those over-tightened belts will bend the shaft, making it unbalanced and vulnerable to premature fractures. You can easily test whether the belt tension is correct by feeling it with your hand. To check the bearings, you must move the water pump shaft around to see if there if it is stuck, or if it can freely move around. Or, loosen the fan belt, and check to see if the pump can turn freely. Sometimes, too loose belts will also create havoc with the water pump, by causing the pump to turn too slowly. If the pulley belt is too tight, the belt will slip and cut down on the flow of coolant through your Cadillac engine. If you suspect your pulley belts have deteriorated so much that the water pump has been damaged, replace the pump and pulleys immediately.
