Cadillac fuel pumps, depending on the age of the car model, can come in both mechanical and electrical varieties. Older cars use mechanical fuel pumps, which are mounted on the engine. A mechanical fuel pump follows the basic diaphragm pump design, which is attached to a rocker arm that flexes the diaphragm and pumps the fuel into the engine. Modern Cadillac models rely on electrical fuel pumps. Electrical fuel pumps are located near or inside the fuel tank. They rely on a current that is invoked as soon as you turn the ignition key. There is also a difference in the demands of pressure in these two kinds of fuel pumps: mechanical pumps create pressures of 4 to 6 psi, while electric pumps require pressures of 30-40 psi. In electrical systems, the fuel pump relay closes when the ignition key is turned. That activates the fuel pump for several seconds; in that time, the pressure levels rise. The relay stops when the engine begins to crank. When there is an interruption in the electrical current or a leak that interferes with the pressure, your Cadillac fuel pump will start to fail. At that point, order a new pump set here and install it yourself. The job should take two to three hours, and will save you significant repair bills.
