The remarkable history of AM General has started in Terre Haute, Indiana. Before it was named AM General, it began as Standard Wheel Company. In 1903 the company expanded and added the Overland Automotive Division. Five years later, the Overland Company was purchased by John North Willys which renamed the company to Willys-Overland Motors, Inc. It was Willys that produced vehicles for the US Army and later on mass produced America's first four-wheel drive one-fourth-ton tactical utility truck-the famous Jeep of World War II. Another buyout happens in the year 1953, this time it was Kaizer Motors that bought the Willys Overland. The company was then changed to Kaizer-Jeep Corporation. It was Kaizer that formed the Defense and Government Products Division in 1967. AM Motors then purchased Kaizer and made the production of military vehicles its main product. That said, the early AM General parts and AM General accessories were also exclusively designed for military vehicles. AM General was then supplying the US military with all the AM General auto parts they need for their four wheel drive tactical utility trucks.
Aside from four wheel drive tactical utility trucks, AM General was also the producer of buses and other large trucks for used on military, government, and industrial. The AM General parts that these new lineup of vehicles needs are also exclusively supplied by no other than AM General. This is the company's way of ensuring uniform quality in every AM General Accessories and AM General auto parts products that they produced. The year 1970 was one of the remarkable years for AM General. It was on this year that they produced the HMMWV or the High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle more famously known as the Humvee. The other renowned creation of AM General was the Jeep DJ-5 series which was used by the United States Postal Service. The production of the buses only lasted until the year 1979.
Due to the public persistent demand for a civilian version of the Humvee, AM General created the Hummer. The same with its other creation the AM General parts of the Hummer were also produced based on the set standards for quality of AM General. Then in 1999 AM General finally handed over the rights to the Hummer to General Motors. The latter then continued to manufacture H1 until 2006-same year that H1 ceased production.
