You may be familiar with the fact that there's an Acura timing chain on some models and there's an Acura timing belt on some models. Both the Acura timing chain and the Acura timing belt control the speed of camshaft rotation in comparison to that of the crankshaft. But did you know that you can have an Acura timing chain and an Acura timing belt on the same model? Certain Acura vehicles use an Acura timing belt as the main camshaft drive system, thanks to its light weight and smooth drive characteristics. However, to link the regular cams to the variable valve timing mechanism they may use an Acura timing chain since the distance is much shorter. That way you end up with the best of both worlds rather than having to utilize an Acura timing chain in a location that's not appropriate or vice versa. In the end, though, most of you Acura owners will pop the hood and see an engine cover that houses an Acura timing belt rather than an Acura timing chain. For accuracy and silent operation, the Acura timing belt is difficult to beat, and as long as the Acura timing belt is changed at the manufacturer's specified intervals it's also extremely reliable. Acura timing belt problems arise when 'deferred maintenance' is selected as the program of choice. Unlike the nearly indestructible Acura timing chain, which wears out slowly over a long period of time, when an Acura timing belt fails it fails completely and quickly. An Acura timing chain rarely breaks, while an Acura timing belt either works or it is broken. And when an Acura timing belt breaks, a series of unfortunate events takes place between the valves and the pistons in your engine. Frequently a head rebuild or engine rebuild is required in the event of an Acura timing belt failure. So price both an Acura timing belt job and a new Acura engine, then check to see how long it's been since you've changed your Acura timing belt. If it's overdue, get that Acura timing belt replaced as soon as possible.
